Activity Overview
There are 1’000’s of uses for spreadsheets. The following activity illustrates how they can be used to create a bar graph to analyze the frequency of popular music downloads.
New Skill
In this activity, you will practice how to:
- Create a column chart.
- Change text alignment.
- Change the major and minor units of frequency of number.
Lesson
- Open the iTUNES.xls file.
- Create a Column Chart as follows:
a. Select cells A3 – B13
b. Create a Clustered Column chart.
c. Move the location of the chart to a New Sheet. Name the sheet iTUNES CHART.
d. Enter the chart title “MOST POPULAR iTUNES DOWNLOADED” above the chart. Use all caps.
e. Enter the Axis titles:
i. Primary Horizontal Axis Title – Enter the title “SONG, ARTIST” below the chart (x axis). Use all caps.
ii. Primary Vertical Axis Title – Enter the title “FREQUENCY” as a Rotated Title (Y axis). Use all caps.
f. Do NOT show the legend.
g. Show NO data labels. - Format the style and colors of the chart as follows:
a. Change the background fill color of the Chart Area to blue.
b. Change the background fill color of the Plot Area to yellow.
c. Change the colors of the bars to purple.
d. Format the chart title (MOST POPULAR iTUNES) to 20 point.
e. Format the x and y axis titles to 12 point font size (SONG, ARTIST; FREQUENCY).
f. Change the text alignment of the songs along the horizontal axis to 270 degrees.
g. Change the major unit of the frequency numbers to 2000. - Insert a header for the chart using Left section: Your Name, Center section: iTUNES, and Right section: Current Date.
- Insert a footer using Center section: PAGE number
- Print Preview your worksheet.
- Save your document.
- Optional: Print a copy for review.
