CMS W1: Homework

There are two activities for this week:

1. Register for a free hosting account at 000webhost.com.

https://www.000webhost.com

You do need to bring your login credentials for this account to class – you will be using this account to setup and publish your personal installation of WordPress during class.

You do not need a domain name; this hosting company also provides a free subdomain – no domain name is necessary to create your site.

2. We will be using the FileZilla application as an FTP client during class. If you would like to become familiar with how this software works, you can download and install a free copy on your personal computer.

https://filezilla-project.org/

Choose the FileZilla Client – NOT the FileZilla Server.

You can skip this step if you are already familiar with FTP clients and/or have an FTP client installed on your personal workstation and/or decline to install due to the warning outlined below.

WARNING: If you are installing software on your personal computer, you should be aware that problems may arise from any software installation and your computer may stop working.

You are solely responsible for any actions you’ve taken on/with your computer and the instructor, John Larson, nor the University of Nevada assume/share any responsibility for any data and/or financial loss that may result from the installation of any software or modifications you’ve made to your computer.

I strongly recommend you create a backup of your computer systems and operating system before you proceed and/or create a system restore point in case there are any problems that arise from the installation of this software so that you can restore your computer to its previous setting.

After reading that warning, I can understand any apprehensions you may have regarding the installation of new software and you can skip the installation step if you choose.

FileZilla is the same FTP software available in the computer lab. You should read through the FileZilla documentation to familiarize yourself with the use of the software.
